Tone- Image bank
All of these images show tone and they are all taken in black and white, although tone can be shown in colour photographs. Tone is often shown with help of the lighting, as where the light hits will have a lighter tone that where it does not and in the hollows of whatever it is in the photograph it will be a darker tone as less light will be hitting it. In most of the images above the shadows have the darkest tone, most are black and the sun or the light source has the lightest tone, white. In the first photo there is a lot of different tones that all contrast with one another, the tree has darker tones on grey where as the grass and the sky are lighter shades of grey so they contrast with the dark tree.
Jai Maisel
Jai Maisel
Jai Maisel is an American photographer that has received any award for his achievements over time, such as the Life time achievement award from the American Society of media photographers and the Infinity award from the International Centre of Photography. Maisels work is not at controversial as someone other photographers as he tick to 'safe' things to take pictures of such as buildings, landscape and people. Maisel milt focuses on depth, form colour and tone in his photographs but in all of them it is apparent that he looks for all of the formal elements when taking a photograph.
The first photograph of Jai Maisels i have chosen to write about is the one above. In this image it is obvious that colour, reflection and form are the three most evident formal elements in this picture. I like this photograph as due to the background being very bright colours, the black bird in front of it contrasts well. As well as this this image looks three dimensional as on the right hand side of the wall there is a shadow cast from the left hand side, showing us that part of the wall is further lout that the other part. Another reason why i like this image is that the bird and wall is reflected, so it looks like there is water or a mirror in-between where the two reflections meet.
The second image of Jai Maisels i have selected to write about is this one of a forest skyline. I like this image as it shows most of the formal elements, mainly movement, lines and colour. I like how to lines above the trees are more translucent compared to the solid, dark green colour of the trees, this makes the clouds that are going over the trees look thin so we can tell that it is only a thin cover over the trees. The way the clouds for thin lines above the trees make its look this its moving towards us, so i like this image as it shows the movement of something that is usually ignored or goes unseen.
The third photograph of Jai Maisels i have chosen to write about is this one of white furniture against the white door. In the picture tone and form are the two main formal elements that are most noticeable. I like this photograph a lot as although everything is white, we can see that the things in the picture are all three dimensional due to the shadows formed from the window that looks to be the the right of the photograph. Through the use of form, Maisel is able toake this picture look three dimensional and stop everything from blending in together as everything has a shadow or slightly different tones, so every element of this photograph is noticeable.
The final photograph of Jai Maisel's i have chosen to write about it a skyline of New York, showing the sun and the clouds above it. I like this image as it mainly uses dark colours and there is a point where the bright colour starts and we can see where it spreads to. In this photograph colour and tone have been taken into a lot of consideration, we can see that colour has as there is a very smooth transition between the yellow/white of the sun, to the black and grey of the city below. As well as this the clouds and the buildings look three dimensional due to the colour tones of them, As the clouds are darker in the centre and to the right than they are the the left, it shows where the sun is hitting them and this look more three dimensional and makes it stand out more against the blue sky.
Summary paragraph and influence;
To summarise, Jai Maisel's work mainly focus on colour and tone as most of Maisel's work is in black or white. As well as colour i like how he uses the lighting to change the tone of his photographs and to add more depth to them.
Through looking at Jai Maisels work i have become influence into looking at the colour and tones used. In a lot of Jai Maisel's work he uses a small variation of colours and lot of different tones of the same colour, therefore when we shot for colour, i took a photo that only has different tones of black, white and greys.

Diane Arbus
Diane Arbus
I have chosen to write about Diane Arbus, a an American photographer, as i find her work to be the most inspirational. Diana Arbus is most well known for her black and white photographs of taken of 'marginal' people (such as nudist, dwarfs or transgender people, just people that are considered to be unusual or 'ugly'. I like Diane Arbus's work a lot as she takes pictures of things that would be 'disgusting' for people to look at in the 40's and 50's, which was then she was most active in photography. Diane Arbus was known as the 'photographer of freaks' to many but i personally respect her for her work as she made a lot of thing, such as being Transgender, less of a taboo subject for many.
This first picture i have chosen of Diane Arbus's is one of her most famous of a Transgender (wo)man. I like this picture the most out of all of the ones she has taken as being Transgender was a huge taboo topic in the 50's, it was seen as disgusting and highly frowned upon so by Diane Arbus tang this photograph i feel as though it was progress in making Transgender less of a taboo topic like it is today. In this picture Diane Arbus pays particular attention to the form and the lines on his face. When looking at form in the picture its very subtle but in certain places like around his nose and his eye you are able to see that its a three dimensional person in a two dimensional picture. And the lines underneath his eyes and on his hands provide assurance that this photo is of an actually person, not just of a painting.
This photograph is another one of my favourites taken by Diane Arbus. What i like most about this photograph is that although they are twins so they look similar and they are dressed the same, they have completely different facial expressions. The one on the left looks expressionless, making her look quite sad whereas the town on the right looks a lot more happier. I like this picture as it shoes that in the case of people that are the same in so many ways, like twins, everyone feels differently, which is a good message to show as a lot of people just assume children are happy but they're not. In this image tone is used very well as it shows the hollows and defines their faces, making them look more three dimensional.
This images shows a young, skinny boy holding a toy grenade with a slightly worried look on his face. I like this picture as i believe it shows the problem of child soldiers. The way he's holding a toy grenade and has very worried look on his face shows that children do not want to be soldiers, they are raised with all of thee violent toys like guns and grenades they are being raised to fight in wars. The use of form in this picture shows the the shadows of the tress behind him making them look more three dimensional and the dark tones of his shorts make him stand out against the light tones of the background.
In this picture it shows two 'regular' sized people and a 'giant' person in a living room. This is another one of Diane Arbus's photographs that show 'abnormality' in society. I like this photo of Diane Arbus's as it shows something that people don't like to see. People try to avoid looking at things that are different or unexplained as it 'scares' people, so by Diane Arbus taking a picture like this it would be weird for people to look at as it shoes the differences in society. In this picture Arbus uses depth to show the heigh of the 'giant' compared to the 'normal' people next to him. Also form is used to make the people look three dimensional in a two dimensional photograph.
Summary and influence paragraph;
To summarise Diane Arbus's work, she takes black and white photographs of topics that were very controversial in that time. She looked into the abnormality of people and the reaction people had when looking at it. Out of the majority of photographers i have looked at, i like Arbus's work the most as she looked at the tone and form of the photograph as well as trying to make taboo topics less of a big thing in society. From looking at Diane Arbus's work i was influenced to look more into the tone of my photographs. As in Arbus's work there isn't a lot of contrast between the tone of the subject and the tone of the background, so when we did the shot for tone, i ensured that some of my photographs only had a slight contrast between the subject and the background.

Research Log
Edward Weston
http://www.edward-weston.com
Edward Weston has a very similar style in all of his photographs but he takes pictures of a lot of different things, such as natural forms, nudes and architecture. There are a few people that do not like his work as they find his pictures of nudes to be very controversial, however i find it interesting the way he uses different tones and shadow to make the two dimensional picture appear to be three dimensional. I think Edward Weston's work would be useful when looking at tone and form as it is apparent from all of his photographs that he takes these formal elopements into great consideration.
Ansel Adams
http://www.anseladams.com
Ansel Adams is semi-famous photographer. His work is mainly in black and white and he is known for using shadows to create photographs that include the formal element, form. I like Adams work as it he takes a lot of formal elements into consideration before he takes the picture. Ansel Adams work will be useful to me if we ever take pictures based around form, tone, line or depth.

William de Wiveleslie Abney was a famous british photographer. The vast majority of his photographs were in sepia and the main subject of which his photographers were of was architecture. I like his work as he mainly focused on he lines and the depth of the photograph. William de Wiveleslie Abney's work would come in useful when it comes to taking photos of depth and also form as he uses the shadows to make the buildings/walls look two dimensional.
Elliot Porter.
http://www.cartermuseum.org/collections/porter/index.php
In contrast to Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter shows form and depth by using colour and tone. I like Elliot Porters work was he often uses tone to show that something has three dimensions in a two dimensional photograph. he uses darker colours to contrast against the lighter colours and often edits them to be more vibrant that they may originally be to show the person looking at it the beauty that colours can hold. I would look at Elliot Porters work if we had to ale photographs of colour or tone as i could take inspiration from hims use of editing and lighting.

Diana Arbus is an american photographer that only takes pictures in black and white.
There are people who dislike Diana Arbus's work as she sometimes photographs people naked however i personally find Diana Arbus's work inspiring as she always photographs controversial subjects in society. Robert Capa is most well known for his photographs during the war, of soldiers and of civilians. All of his photographs are in black and white and tend to have a main focus in the middle of the photograph. I like Robert Capa's work it it would be most useful when looking at movement in pictures as in a lot of his photographs the background is blurry so it appears that there is a lot of movement going on in the background.
