- lightness, brightness or value of a patch in a photograph: dark tones correspond to shadows, light tones correspond to bright or highlight areas.
Describing words of tone;
- dark, light, vibrant, intense, dim, mellow.
Four annotated pictures;
The first image i have selected to write about is this picture taken in black and white that shows a field along the bottom and clouds in the sky. This is an example of a picture that shows different tones of grey. In the original picture some of the clouds are white and the others are dark, rain clouds. This explains why some clouds are nearly black when the picture is in black and
white.

The second image shows different tones of yellow and oranges. I like this photo as it is different from the usual images that show tone as they are usually in black and white. There different tones on the leaf are caused by the lighting behind it and something else behind the leaf that is casting a shadow, making parts of it darker than others.

The third image is another example of tone taken in black and white like the majority of pictures taken to show tone.
In this picture we can see a variety of different shades of black, white and greys. It is lighter where the lights are in the background of the picture and it is darker the further away it gets from the lights, like at the top of the tree in the centre of the picture.
This photograph shows different shades of green in the backgrounds and different shades of pink on the flower petals which are the focal point of this photograph. I like this picture as it shows different tones in nature that are not effected by anything man made, such as lights.
