The main way that different textures are shown in photographs is through the photographers use of lighting and shadows. If the object is rough are bumpy, or just doesn't have a flat surface, then as the light shines on it, where there is a dip or it is higher up, it is darker than the rest of the object, but if the surface of it is flat then you can often see the reflection of the light source reflecting off of the surface. Texture can be shown in both colour photos and black and white photos as they both rely mainly on tone and depth to show the texture of subject in the photograph. In the first photograph we can see by different tone and colours that the main surface of the leaf is smooth, we can see this as it is all one colour and there is a slight reflection from the light source but wet can also see that there are some bumps and thin ridges in the leaf, we can see this at the leaf is darker in some points than in others.
