Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann.

In this photographer research log i have chosen to write about the photographer Jerry Uelsmann. I like Uelsmann's work as his photographs are very surreal and his use of editing is very good that it can go unnoticed, which makes the photographer look real and he takes great consideration when looking at the formal elements.

The first photograph i have chosen to write about taken by Jerry Uelsmann is the one showing floating trees. This image show that Uelsmann has taken consideration in looking into reflection. the reflection of the tree and grass makes it look like it is in or over water. As well as this the different shadows and tone on the grass below the tree in the centre make it look more three dimensional. In the background the mountains are covered in some parts by, what looks like, snow. The snow is a similar colour to the white sky, this makes the tops of the mountains look they they are floating and the snow blends in the the sky. I like this image as it look normal until you notice the tress in the background that are floating.

 The second image of Uelsmann's i have chosen to write about is this one of a house growing out of a tree that has been cut down. This image shows that Jerry Uelsmann has look greatly at the different tones and lines of the tree trunk to make them look more three dimensional. I like this photograph of his as the way he has edited it makes it look very real and although it is in black and white we can see that the tree and the house have the same tones.

 The third image of Jerry Uelsmann's that i have chosen t write about is the one above that shows boats on a lake. This is a strange photograph for Jerry Uelsmann to take as it is not surreal in anyway, however it is still a very good photograph as the reflections of the boats and the trees show that they are on water, and the different tones of the trees show how far away they are into the distance.

Jerry Uelsmann uses many formal element in his work, except from colour as all of his photographs are in black and white, however we can see the difference in the unedited subject of the photograph through the different tones he uses. In this photograph, it is obvious that Jerry Uelsmann take form into consideration at the hand in this photograph is darker around the outside making it look more three dimensional.

Summary paragraph and influence;
To summarise Jerry Uelsmann's work, he takes two photos, both tend to be black and white and the objects often have similar tones and he uses editing to create one surreal picture with the wo he had taken. I like his work as i like surrealist art, like the work of Salvador Dahli and i like how he's brought surrealism into photography.
Jerry Uelsmann's work has influenced me to look more at the editing side of photography rather than just taking the pictures. I like how he has taken two separate photographs and edited them together into one surreal photograph. I also like his attention to reflection and tone. His work has influenced me to think more creatively about taking a picture and what the picture(s) could be after they have been edited. As well as this i was influenced by Uelsmann's use of tone has influenced by own work on tone as in a lot of his photos there is a variety of different contrasts between the tones, this has influenced my  work on colour and tone to tie a photo of a lot of different colours, then when the photos edited to black and white, it will show a variety of different tones.
